Top users of deforestation wood find easy market in Europe

Developing a hidden gem within a report

Hardwood products on sale in Europe come from the biggest users of deforestation timber in Indonesia, where NGOs filmed large areas of forest cleared in one of the last orangutan strongholds, according to an investigation published today. Drone images showing devastated districts of Borneo were released as part of the report, Risky Business, published by the British investigative NGO Earthsight and its Indonesian partner Auriga Nusantara. Another awesome Earthsight report that did well in the media, generating nearly 200 articles. I think it could have done much better, but we were pressed for time. I really enjoyed the challenge with this report of identifying a newsy aspect that was under-developed in the report (the team had recorded destruction at one of the last orangutan strongholds) and building it into something solid for journalists.
