New asbestos’ warning to chemical sector from investors with $10 trillion in assets

PFAS chemicals are ‘the new asbestos’ for the chemical sector and firms should quit production, a group of over 50 institutional investors and their representatives warned today. The investors, with over $10 trillion in assets under management or advice, wrote their warning to the CEOs of the world’s 50 largest stock-listed chemical companies. The challenge with this work was to win mainstream media attention for content that was mostly of niche interest – a detailed ranking of chemical companies failing to become more sustainable. We added several other more newsworthy elements to create a package of news that included some focus on the ranking and did well in the media, resulting in over 70 articles, including front pages of financial outlets FD and L’Echo, as well as popular Danish daily Information. Our ‘new asbestos’ messaging was well carried by reporters.
