Europe failing to keep its chemicals promise

Using an anniversary as a media hook

An EU plan to ban more harmful chemicals than anywhere else in the world is failing, NGOs warned this week. Exactly a year ago, the European Commission announced it would rapidly ban thousands of the most notorious chemicals still found in consumer products and contributing to growing human infertility, serious illnesses and environmental harms. Media coverage was extensive. A review of progress one year later shows a very different outcome is emerging. Read the full press release here.

ClientEarth and the European Environmental Bureau carried out the review to benchmark progress. The document needed considerable edits to prepare it for journalists. The report was covered by some of Europe’s leading newspapers, including Der Spiegel, Le Parisien and The Guardian, being featured in around 50 articles in 9 European countries. Le Parisien editors felt the story was worth sending an SMS alert to its readers.
