Major fashion brands are using ever greater amounts of polluting synthetic textiles, a survey of 50 global firms by the Changing Markets Foundation has found. Industry data shared with the non-profit suggests the sector is doubling down on fast fashion. A report by the NGO, launched on the final day of London Fashion Week, also warned that EU initiatives to reduce fashion’s footprint are backfiring, with anti-greenwashing plans set to label fast fashion fabrics as more environmentally friendly than organic cotton and a microplastic pollution initiative downgraded to a brochure. When fewer brands responding to the survey, reaching newsworthy conclusions is more of a challenge. Thankfully, the context of growing scientific concern and a wave of incoming regulations made for an attractive package. Exclusives were arranged with leading print outlets across Europe which held for the most part, despite dramatic flooding just ahead of launch. The report even made the front page of De Morgen.
